High threshold motor unit definition
WebMotor units have a recruitment frequency of 6–10 Hz and are recognisable by the constancy of the waveform of each discharge (fig 2). A number of parameters of motor unit potentials can be measured; this is achieved by triggering the sweep of an EMG machine by the potential crossing of a threshold and displaying the potential in its entirety. WebMU recruitment involves rate modulation of individual MUPs and activation of additional motor units. With weak voluntary effort, a low-threshold, small motor unit is recruited at 4 or 5 Hz. With increasing effort, MU firing frequency increases, and successively higher threshold, larger units are activated (Henneman's size principle).

Motor units recruited at low force (low-threshold units) tend to be small motor units, while high-threshold units are recruited when higher forces are needed and involve larger motor neurons. These tend to have shorter contraction times than the smaller units.
